Artificial Reefs - Protection Modules

Depth (minimum - maximum): -19 to -21 meters
Type of dive: artificial reef
Snorkeling: No

 • Site Characteristics:

In each group there are three artificial structures, consisting of several open concrete cubes, with 1.30 m high each, set on the sandy bottom. As the Exploration Modules, these reefs are included in the  project implemented by IPIMAR along the Algarve coast since the 90s.

• Fauna:
The result of this IPIMAR experience is very good: today these reefs are used by large schools of bream and many rock fishes. We can also see sea basses, forkbeards, moray eels and conger eels.

• Diving Tips:
In some dives you can visit the three groups of reefs, following the bottom cables. Do not enter or attempt to force entry inside the reef modules, just observe the animals from the outside, without disturbing them.
